If you were to want to visit more catacombs, then a few minutes’ walk along the road are the extensive St Agatha’s Catacombs (Mon–Fri 9am–4.30pm, Sat 9am–12.30pm; charge). Local lore says that St Agatha was in Malta and hid in Rabat’s catacombs but later returned home to Sicily only to be tortured and die a martyr rather than marry the Roman governor of Catania. The highlight here are its many superbly coloured frescoes, most of which are medieval, but some date to before the Arab invasion. Sadly all have been defaced. Be warned that the tunnels are very dark – it’s a good idea to bring a torch.
